Lilac Springtails thrive in transparent plastic or glass containers with secure, ventilated lids. Deli cups, repurposed food-grade tubs, or any container with a few inches of substrate depth work well. A tight-fitting lid is essential — springtails can escape through tiny gaps, and once outside their humid environment they will quickly desiccate. For ventilation, micropore tape is an excellent breathable option that keeps springtails safely inside as long as your container has a gasket on the lid.
Substrate Composition and Preparation
A blend of organic topsoil and sphagnum moss provides excellent moisture retention while staying aerated enough to prevent anaerobic conditions. You can also use Mossarium Labs Springtail Clay, a calcium-bearing culture media specifically formulated to support springtail health and population density. Note: Springtail Clay is best suited for jumping springtail species and is not recommended for non-jumping species.
Managing Temperature and Humidity for Optimal Growth

Lilac Springtails prefer slightly warmer conditions than temperate species. They thrive between 72°F and 82°F (22°C to 28°C). Keeping cultures at the higher end of this range encourages faster reproduction and population growth. Avoid temperatures above 85°F, which can stress or crash a culture.
Humidity Maintenance Techniques
Consistent moisture is critical for Ceratophysella isabellae. The substrate should remain damp but never waterlogged, with ambient humidity inside the enclosure around 75–85%. Mist one side of the enclosure with dechlorinated or distilled water every few days, leaving the opposite side slightly drier to create a moisture gradient. This allows springtails to self-regulate and prevents the substrate from turning anaerobic. If culturing on clay, add a small amount of water and allow the clay to absorb it fully before adding more.

Lilac Springtails are detritivores, naturally consuming decaying organic matter, fungi, algae, and microorganisms. They will quickly disperse and begin colonizing. For best results, seed before adding animals so the springtail population has time to establish before waste production begins.

Regular Habitat Upkeep
- Check substrate moisture every few days and mist as needed — the substrate should feel damp but not dripping.
- Remove any foul-smelling or heavily molded debris that springtails aren't consuming quickly enough.
- Monitor temperature and keep the culture away from heat vents, direct sunlight, or cold drafts.
Common Issues and Solutions
If your population is declining, the most common culprits are substrate that is too dry, overfeeding leading to mold overgrowth, or temperatures outside the optimal range. Adjust moisture levels first, then evaluate feeding frequency. If the culture smells sour or anaerobic, it may need a full substrate refresh — transfer as many springtails as possible to a new container with fresh substrate.
